The »seven liberal arts« (lat. »Septem Artes liberales«) are a canon of theoretical sciences: grammar, rhetoric, dialectic/logic, arithmetic, music, geometry, astronomy

Based on the knowledge of the Greek scholars they were considered to be a basis for the study and explanation of the world in the Middle Ages.

»Siebengescheit« consists of the two parts sieben, which means seven, and gescheit, which means clever. In the former german language use this phrase described a person, who was educated in all seven liberal arts. Today it is used ironically in a sense of 'know-it-all'.
